League of Women Voters, Central Florida Urban League plan get-out-the-vote volunteer day in Orlando

The League of Women Voters of Orange County (LWVOC), the Central Florida Urban League and other organizations are rallying Saturday to help get out the vote among Generation Z and millennial voters in one Orlando precinct known for lower turnout.

Saturday’s “Unite & Rise for Voting Rights” Day of Action is part of a national effort to encourage voter participation throughout the country.

“Democracy doesn’t defend itself — people do,” said Celina Stewart, CEO of the National League of Women Voters. “On August 8, communities across the country are coming together to send a clear message: our democracy belongs to the people. This Day of Action is a declaration that voters are ready to protect the fundamental right that makes all others possible — the freedom to vote.”

The Orlando coalition is focusing on Precinct 603, which had nearly 54% turnout in the 2024 General Election. 

The coalition of volunteers will be canvassing door-to-door, phone banking, making literature drops and sign waving.

“For weeks, LWVOC volunteers have been laying the groundwork for this final push by sending thousands of targeted text messages and handwritten postcards to precinct residents,” the League of Women Voters of Orange County said.

The other organizations involved are: Engage Florida, Equal Ground, and the “Divine Nine” Fraternities and Sororities — Omega Psi Phi (Chi Tau Chapter), Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. (Delta Omicron Omega Chapter) and Phi Beta Sigma (Gamma Delta Sigma Chapter).

Volunteers will be meeting at Shiloh Baptist Church at 604 W. Jackson St. from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Early voting is currently under way in Orange County through Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., leading up to the Aug. 18 Primary. Voters will be deciding several key elections this political cycle from School Board to Orange County Board of Commissioners to state legislative and federal congressional races.
