Le Colisée de Québec, an arena that housed the National Hockey League’s Québec Nordiques between 1979 and 1995, is finally meeting its end. Over the next two years, the building that opened on December 8th, 1949 and saw its last event on September 14th, 2015, a Metallica concert, will be torn down. The building has been empty for the past decade. The reason the Nordiques ownership led by Marcel Aubut decided to sell the franchise to Colorado interests in 1995 was Le Colisée. The arena was antiquated and Aubut was lobbying Québec politicians to spend money to help fund a modern venue. The Québec political leadership said no and the franchise moved to Denver.
A modern arena opened in Québec City in 2015 and there was some hope in the province that Québec City would be able to land an NHL expansion franchise. But NHL owners declined a 2015 Québec bid but took Las Vegas in that expansion cycle. The city and province have hockey fans but hockey fans don’t pay the freight. There doesn’t seem to be full government support of having an NHL franchise return to Québec City which is a small market with limited corporate and television money. The NHL is not expanding in the near future. What Québec City will have in the fall is two Ottawa Senators’ pre-season games. The Senators owner Michael Andlauer, who grew up in Montréal and owns a franchise that straddles the Ontario-Québec border, wants to extend his fanbase and thinks playing two pre-season games in Québec City will help increase interest in his team. Andlauer didn’t rule out playing regular season games in Québec City. Andlauer could be using Québec City as leverage in his negotiation with local Ottawa officials to build a new arena in town. The arena game works that way.

Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca have parted ways with South African head coach Rulani Mokwena, a few weeks before the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States of America.
Sports Talk United confirmed that the decision was made on Wednesday, April 23 after Wydad Casablanca ended the Moroccan Botola Pro season with a 1-1 draw against Olympic Safi.
The decision brought an end to Mokwena’s brief stint in Casablanca following his appointment in July 2024 as Wydad finish third in the league table – qualification spot for CAF Confederation Cup next season.
Summary of Mokwena’s stint at Wydad
This season, Wydad Casablanca failed to play continental football neither CAF Champions League nor Confederation Cup for the first time in a decade and the South African arrived with lots of expectations.
Under Mokwena’s watch, Wydad managed 11 wins, 12 draws (the most by any team in the Moroccan top-flight) and four losses in 27 league matches.
However, things did not end well between the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach and his Moroccan employers amid reports of unpaid salaries for eight months and a run of poor results as RSB Berkane won the league title.
What’s next for Wydad Casablanca
Following the abrupt dismissal of the Mokwena and his backroom staff, Wydad Casablanca will now hope to get a new head coach to begin preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United States of America.
The Moroccan giants are one of the four African teams that will compete in the newly-expanded tournament. They will face Manchester City on June 18, then Juvenus on June 22 and Asian heavyweights Al Ain on June 26.
Newcastle United have confirmed the return of head coach Eddie Howe to his official duties after he was hospitalised for a few days with pneumonia, Sports Talk United reports.
Howe missed the Magpies’ last three Premier League games but he is now ready for coaching duties against Ipswich Town at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
In his absence, Newcastle defeated Manchester United 4-1, followed by a 5-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace 5-0 and they fell to a 4-1 defeat against Aston Villa last weekend.
His return is expected to boost Newcastle United’s final push for UEFA Champions League qualification as they are currently fifth in the Premier League table with five games left.
The club statement on Thursday read: “Newcastle United are delighted to confirm that Eddie Howe has returned to his duties at the club’s training centre.
“Eddie had recently been hospitalised with pneumonia and has now returned to work after a period of recovery. We thank supporters for their warm wishes.”
How has Eddie Howe fared with Newcastle this season
Appointed as Newcastle United head coach in 2021, Howe successfully steered the Magpies out of relegation and a year later, he secured the club’s qualification for the Champions League.
He has improved the club’s reputation so far, and this season, he achieved a landmark success in Newcastle upon Tyne by leading Newcastle to lift their first major trophy in 70 years with a victorious EFL Cup campaign.
His team ran out 2-1 winners against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on March 16 and he also became the first English manager to win an English trophy with a Premier League club since Harry Redknapp’s FA Cup triumph with Portsmouth in 2007-08 season.
Howe’s peculiar playing style has made Newcastle United one of the major contenders for Champions League football next season, with the presence of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy making the Magpies one of the highest-scoring teams in the Premier League this season with 62 goals (just behind Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal).
What’s next for Newcastle Utd
As a result of their EFL Cup triumph, Newcastle United have an automatic qualification for the UEFA Europa League but they are still among the six teams challenging for the four UCL qualification spots.
With 59 points from 33 games, Newcastle occupy the fifth spot with two points above Chelsea and Aston Villa while they find themselves behind Arsenal (eight points), Man City (two points) and Nottingham Forest (a point).
Their final fixtures of the season are as follows:
