Kamia Brown files to run for Orange County Commission in District 2

Former Rep. Kamia Brown has filed to run for Orange County Commission’s District 2 as she runs on a campaign on affordability issues.

“Residents in every corner of Orange County feel the stresses of everyday life and I chose to run for County Commission because local governments can make life better for families by advancing real solutions. This campaign is about strengthening the future of District 2,” said Brown, who represented Pine Hills, Apopka and Ocoee when she served in the House from 2016 to 2022.

“This moment requires thoughtful, and bold leadership that is rooted in community and resident focused problem-solving.”

Also in the running for the District 2 nonpartisan seat are lawyer Marsha Summersill and Ocoee City Commissioner George Oliver III.

District 2 covers west Orange County, including Apopka, Ocoee, Tangerine, Zellwood.

The seat is currently occupied by Commissioner Christine Moore who advanced to a runoff next month in the Apopka Mayor’s race.

Moore has said she plans to step down in April from her County Commissioner seat which could clear the way for District 2 to be without an incumbent or for Gov. Ron DeSantis to appoint someone to fulfill the final eight months of Moore’s term.

Brown’s tenure in the Legislature included serving as House Democratic Leader Pro Tempore from 2020 to 2022 and being elected as Chair of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus in 2022. Brown lost to Geraldine Thompson when she sought a Senate seat in 2022.

Brown’s priorities as an elected official were affordable health care, workforce development, economic growth and efficient government, her campaign said.

“The decisions we make today will shape West Orange County for decades to come,” Brown said.

“I am committed to responsible growth, strong neighborhoods, and a country government that is transparent, accountable, and focused on the people it serves. Public service is a responsibility, not a title. I am running to govern with trust and integrity, and ensure that every resident, regardless of background or zip code, has a seat at the table. I will always put this community first.”

Brown’s campaign kicks off at 5:30 p.m., March 30, at Odd Guys Brewing, located at 48 E. Fifth St. in Apopka.
