Jose Alvarez receives Legislative Appreciation Award from Florida League of Cities

Democratic Rep. Jose Alvarez is dusting off the mantle for a recently bestowed honor from the Florida League of Cities.

He is a recipient of the organization’s “Legislative Appreciation Award” for his work during the 2026 Session to protect the local decision-making of municipalities across the Sunshine State.

Alvarez, a former Mayor of Kissimmee who also served on the City Commission, won his House District 46 seat in 2024.

He said in a statement that he’s “truly honored” to receive the recognition.

“Supporting our cities means supporting the people who call them home,” he said. “I remain committed to strengthening our communities, empowering local leadership, and ensuring every municipality has the tools to thrive.”

Alvarez successfully sponsored legislation this year to create a statewide process allowing residents to recall elected Community Development District (CDD) members through a petition and Special Election.

The measure was inspired by a controversy in Osceola County’s Concorde Estates CDD, where residents accused the Board of spending nearly $1 million in about 20 days without a formal vote. State investigators opened a probe of the issue in February.

Among other measures, Alvarez also voted against legislation to prohibit cities and counties from funding or promoting diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Another bill he opposed focused on curbing the control local governments have over development decisions within their jurisdictions.

He also cast a “no” vote on a proposal aimed at eliminating most homestead property taxes.

Alvarez represents House District 46, which covers a large portion of Osceola County, including Kissimmee, St. Cloud and the unincorporated area of Poinciana, and a small portion of Orange County south of Orlando.

Alvarez won election two years ago with 57% of the vote.

He faces two Democratic Primary challengers this election cycle.

One Republican and one no-party candidate are also in the HD 46 race, according to the Florida Division of Elections.
