U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis expects Floridians to adjust after a court ruling opened the path to legal open carry of firearms.
But the Republican Congressman from the Panhandle acknowledges that Sheriffs are “going to get an uptick in phone calls about people carrying their gun into Walmart” in the near future, as people with aversions to the practice adjust to seeing armed shoppers in the produce aisle.
“Just know that it’s a new day in Florida. And you might see somebody carrying a gun and you don’t need to be startled. But if you’re going to be carrying a gun, please just understand what the limits of the law are. And if somebody asks you to leave their store, that’s their right too,” Patronis told host Andrew McKay on NewsRadio 1620.
Last week, Florida’s 1st District Court of Appeal ruled against the open carry ban, creating a pathway to legalization long sought by Gov. Ron DeSantis and recently appointed Attorney General James Uthmeier, who has signaled he won’t fight this decision.
Patronis urges gun owners to get concealed carry permits all the same.
“You can still go get your concealed permit. That will get you reciprocity in other states,” Patronis noted.
