Attorney General James Uthmeier says he is suing Planned Parenthood, accusing the organization of misrepresenting safety elements of drugs used to induce chemical abortions.
“It is vile that Planned Parenthood cares more about lining their pockets than providing women with factual information about the health risks of chemical abortion drugs,” Uthmeier said in a news release. “When it comes to health and safety in Florida, we won’t tolerate blatant lies using fabricated medical ‘facts’ that have no scientific basis.”
The legal brief was filed in the 1st Judicial Circuit of Florida in Santa Rosa County and lists both Planned Parenthood Federation of America Inc. and Planned Parenthood of Florida Inc. as defendants in the case.
The legal action claims Planned Parenthood is “exploiting patient trust” and making false claims about the safety elements of drugs used in chemical abortions. Uthmeier’s suit alleges Planned Parenthood claimed those chemicals are “safer than Tylenol.”
Uthmeier said those claims have been debunked through various expert testimony and other scientific studies. He said that despite the evidence, Planned Parenthood continues to promote the claims on various platforms.
“Tylenol is an over-the-counter pain medicine that everyone understands, intuitively and by experience, to be safe,” the state’s lawsuit said. “Chemical abortion, by contrast, uses mifepristone and misoprostol and is far more dangerous. Use of chemical abortion drugs routinely lands women in the emergency room with hemorrhaging and other serious complications.”
“The results of Planned Parenthood’s deception-fueled sales have been disastrous,” the lawsuit continued. “An analysis released earlier this year found that 11% of women experience a serious adverse event like sepsis or hemorrhaging within 45 days of a chemical abortion.”
The lawsuit seeks statutory penalties, punitive damages and a court-ordered injunction.
