Gov. DeSantis says legislators can expect to be tied up in Special Sessions for up to 6 weeks

The budget, congressional districts, and property taxes all could be discussed.

Gov. Ron DeSantis believes the Legislature left a lot undone during the Regular Session, and as a result they can expect to be in Tallahassee often this Spring.

“There’ll be a lot of people in Tallahassee over the next probably four to six weeks, and there’s a lot of things that need to be addressed,” DeSantis said in Tampa.

Among those issues: congressional redistricting, for which a Special Session is supposed to start on April 20. But a Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which DeSantis believes will invalidate minority-access congressional districts, has yet to be rendered.

DeSantis said “some window of opportunity beyond that” exists to draw a new map given the filing deadline for candidates is during the second week of June.

Still, he anticipates action during the scheduled week, in addition to “some other issues” being taken up.

“There’s going to have to be a Special Session to handle the budget. I don’t think it’s going to probably be the same week of that redistricting. I think it needs to be done sooner than that,” DeSantis said.

“And then you have potentially other issues, like property tax to put on the ballot. You’ve got some other things that I think fell through the cracks, that I think the voters are going to want us to look at, and get some results on. And you know, no more posturing, let’s just get the job done.”
