Gov. DeSantis says Florida drivers on Progressive insurance could pocket $300

The average Progressive customer from Florida will receive a $300 rebate, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced at a press conference in Sarasota.

Florida negotiated nearly $1 billion in rebates for Progressive insurance policyholders. Other major auto insurers could be following suit in the next few months, DeSantis said, as he highlighted reforms that are helping consumers save money.

DeSantis called the news “a big deal that’s going to be helpful for a lot of folks.”

“It depends on how long you’ve been with Progressive,” DeSantis said. “If you’ve been with Progressive this whole time, you’re going to get a bigger rebate. It might be a check. It might be a credit on your bill.”

The savings are the result of new litigation reforms from late 2022 and 2023 after Florida was once “a litigation hellhole,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis said more deals with other auto insurers could be forthcoming by the end of this year as the state continues its negotiations. He predicted similar rebates for other policyholders.

“We think a lot of this is going to be very similar,” DeSantis said. “We don’t think that there’s a big difference amongst different carriers.”

Office of Insurance Regulation Commissioner Michael Yaworsky said Progressive had been a willing negotiator in the talks “to get dollars back to consumers faster to avoid statutory triggers and avoid a fight.”

“Everybody here has just done the right thing,” he said. “And we look forward as we’re talking to other companies now to begin that same process.”

DeSantis highlighted that the top five auto writer insurance groups averaged a 6.5% reduction in rates for 2025.

“Part of the reason they’re able to do that is because you have seen a decline in litigation expenses almost really immediately from the ’22-23 reforms,” DeSantis said.
