Gov. DeSantis orders flags at half-staff in honor of former Holly Hill Mayor Roy Johnson

The late Roy Johnson, who served two terms as Mayor of Holly Hill and later sat on the City Commission, will be honored by a traditional flag-lowering at government buildings.

Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered United States and Florida flags to be flown at half-staff at the Capitol and all local and state buildings, installations and grounds throughout Holly Hill from sunrise to sunset Friday.

Johnson, DeSantis said in a statement, “will be remembered for his love of community and dedication to improving the City of Holly Hill.”

Johnson died March 23 at the age of 86 after a life defined by service, craftsmanship and community leadership. Born in Baltimore in November 1939 and raised in Virginia, according to his obituary, he joined the U.S. Air Force after high school, serving more than six years as an airplane mechanic.

He went on to build a career as a master mechanic, opening One Stop Automotive in Holly Hill in 1970, before joining Florida Power & Light, where he worked as a lead technician for more than 40 years.

Johnson won the Holly Hill mayoralty in 2010. He then ran for — and won — the District 4 seat on the City Commission in 2020. His tenure included service as Vice Mayor.

A Republican, Johnson was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, his son Roy Jr. and several brothers, and is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings and extended family.

A visitation and funeral service will be held April 10 at Holly Hill Church of Christ, followed by a military honors burial at Daytona Memorial Park.

Guests are welcomed to wear traditional black, his obituary said, though red, white and blue attire is encouraged in honor of Johnson’s service.
