Gov. DeSantis appoints former Suwannee County Commissioner to return to the board


Fleming fills the vacant District 2 seat after Maurice Perkins died following a fight with cancer in November.

A former Suwannee County Commissioner is set to return to the body following an appointment from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

DeSantis appointed Clyde Fleming to serve the county in the Big Bend area. Fleming previously served on the Suwannee County Commission for more than a decade, from 2010 to 2022.

Fleming is retired but has been an active member of the Suwannee County community. He’s a member of the Suwannee County Quarterback Club. He was also a recipient of of the Florida Association of Counties Trailblazer Award and was a technician at the W.S. Badcock Corp.

Fleming is filling the District 2 Commission seat that became vacant after Maurice Perkins passed away in November following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Perkins was elected in 2022. He was also a pastor in the community.

Flags at government facilities in Suwannee County were lowered to half-staff upon order by DeSantis to honor Perkins on Dec. 5.
