Gators fall to South Carolina

South Carolina delivered one of the biggest surprises of the SEC season Saturday, rolling past No. 16 Florida Gators 38-19 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. Behind a sensational performance from quarterback LaNorris Sellers, the Gamecocks ended an eight-game conference losing streak and handed the Gators their second SEC defeat of the season.

The victory marked South Carolina’s first conference win since September 2025 and its first road win in Gainesville since 2014. Florida entered the matchup as a double-digit home favorite but was overwhelmed in the second half as the Gamecocks seized control and never looked back.

LaNorris Sellers Delivers His Best Performance in Nearly Two Years

Sellers was the difference-maker throughout the afternoon. The South Carolina signal-caller completed 23 of 35 passes for 279 yards and four touchdown passes while adding a rushing touchdown. His five total touchdowns represented his most productive outing since a five-touchdown performance against Missouri in November 2024.

Sellers spread the ball around effectively, connecting with Nyck Harbor, Mazeo Bennett Jr., Donovan Murph and Lex Cyrus for touchdowns. Harbor led the receiving corps with 83 yards on four catches and a score as Florida’s struggling secondary had no answer for the Gamecocks’ aerial attack.

Third Quarter Turns the Game

After leading 17-10 at halftime, South Carolina took complete control following a weather delay that extended the break by approximately 45 minutes. The Gamecocks scored two touchdowns in the third quarter, stretching the advantage to 31-13 and silencing the home crowd.

A 26-yard touchdown pass from Sellers to Donovan Murph highlighted the surge, and Sellers later capped a drive with a one-yard rushing score after a physical run that showcased his strength and determination.

South Carolina finished with 393 total yards and converted 10 of 16 third-down opportunities, consistently extending drives and keeping Florida’s defense on the field.

Florida’s Problems Continue

For Florida, the loss raised more concerns following last week’s 45-17 defeat at Missouri. The Gators dropped to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play while suffering their second consecutive lopsided defeat.

Quarterback Aaron Philo completed 21 of 28 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown but committed two turnovers. Florida finished with three giveaways overall, including a late interception by backup quarterback Tramell Jones Jr.

Meanwhile, star running back Jadan Baugh was held to 59 rushing yards before adding a late touchdown in the closing minutes. Florida’s offense never found consistent rhythm, and its defense struggled to pressure Sellers throughout the contest.

Defensive Impact Helps Seal Victory

South Carolina’s defense also delivered key plays. Defensive end Dylan Stewart returned from suspension and forced two fumbles, helping the Gamecocks win the turnover battle and maintain momentum.

The Gamecocks’ defense limited Florida when it mattered most and capitalized on mistakes, allowing South Carolina to complete one of its most important SEC victories in recent seasons.

What the Result Means

The victory improves South Carolina to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in SEC play, providing a much-needed boost for Shane Beamer’s program after several close conference losses over the past year.

For Florida, questions will intensify after back-to-back defeats. The Gators entered the game ranked No. 16 nationally but now face the prospect of falling out of the AP Top 25 after being outscored 83-36 over their last two contests.
