Former Duke football player Brandon Braxton was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the July 2024 death of a North Carolina real estate agent — with investigators saying he owned up to committing the crime.
Braxton was charged last Thursday with the murder of Charlotte-based realtor Whitney Hurd — eight months after she was found dead inside her townhome.
According to the New York Post, the former wide receiver confessed to the act while being held at the sheriff’s department after being arrested for trespassing — one of his seven arrests following the murder.
“I killed Whitney Hurd,” Braxton allegedly said to the Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Office, according to an arrest affidavit viewed by the outlet.
Hurd went missing back in July 2024. Three days later, she was found dead inside her home from multiple stab wounds … and was wrapped in bedding.
33-year-old Braxton became a person of interest after his fingerprints were found around her home and her car.
Beyond the first-degree murder charge … he was also busted for robbery with a dangerous weapon — officials say he stole Hurd’s BMW X3 and phone.
Braxton and Hurd were said to be friends in high school … but lost touch over the years. Before the killing, officials say he would show up at her house — and one night he fell asleep in her driveway.
In 43 games for the Blue Devils, Braxton caught 93 passes for 893 yards and three touchdowns. He also played defense, racking up 51 tackles.
He’s due back in court on April 9.

Soccer Coach Charged With Murder

5:30 PM PST — Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman just announced that Mario Edgardo Garcia-Aquino faces a possible maximum sentence of death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
He was also charged in a separate case with one felony count of assault with the intent to commit a sexual offense. Garcia-Aquino is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy in February 2024. If convicted as charged, he faces a possible maximum sentence of six years in state prison on that case.
A soccer coach who a Los Angeles family says was the last person who had contact with their dead son is being charged with the boy’s murder … TMZ has learned.
The missing 13-year-old boy Oscar Omar Hernandez was found dead in a ditch last week in Oxnard and his family says he was last seen with his soccer coach, 43-year-old Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Aquino is being charged with Oscar’s murder.
As we reported … Aquino was named a person of interest in the boy’s disappearance — and he was arrested last week by LAPD detectives on a warrant from an unrelated sexual assault case that was previously investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna are holding a press conference later today to announce the murder charge against Aquino.
