Philo Efficient, Confident in First Start
Florida opened its 2026 season with a commanding 66–21 victory over Florida Atlantic, showcasing an offense that looked polished from the opening snap. Quarterback Aaron Philo delivered a strong debut, completing 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns. His lone interception, according to head coach Jon Sumrall, was not on him, noting that Micah Mays “should have caught that ball.”
Philo added 20 rushing yards and a touchdown, showing comfort in both designed runs and scrambles. Tramell Jones Jr. handled the final two drives, finishing 4-of-5 for 68 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a 32-yard catch-and-run from Byron Louis and a scoring strike to Micah Jones.
Baugh Breaks Loose Again
As expected, Jadan Baugh powered the Gators’ ground attack, rushing for 160 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries. He surpassed 2,000 career rushing yards and recorded his sixth career 100-yard game. Duke Clark added 65 yards on eight carries, while London Montgomery and Louis contributed in rotation.
Philo’s mobility added another layer to the offense, and the Gators’ run game consistently overwhelmed FAU’s front.
Playmakers Everywhere
Florida’s receiving corps delivered explosive plays throughout the night. Vernell Brown led the group with six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, including a 49-yard score and 81 yards after the catch. Dallas Wilson added 47 yards, and TJ Abrams produced the longest play of the game with a 63-yard reception.
Bailey Stockton and Duke Clark each hauled in touchdowns, giving Florida six different players who found the end zone.
Defense Tightens After Halftime
Sumrall called the first half “soft,” but the defense responded immediately after the break with two sacks on FAU’s opening drive. The Owls finished with 396 yards and 25 first downs, but Florida forced key mistakes: DJ Coleman and Dijon Johnson recorded interceptions, and Brendan Bett forced a goal-line fumble in the fourth quarter.
The Gators totaled nine hurries and six tackles for loss, settling into a more aggressive rhythm as the game progressed.
Looking Ahead
Florida’s offense appears ahead of schedule, and the defense showed needed adjustments after halftime. The Gators leave Week 1 with momentum and a clear identity on both sides of the ball. Florida hosts Campbell next Saturday.
