The state’s largest law enforcement union is backing Jim DeNiro in his bid to unseat District 4 Sarasota County Commissioner Joe Neunder during the GOP Primary.
The Florida Police Benevolent Association (FPBA) is endorsing DeNiro for the Sarasota County Commission District 4 seat, citing the retired Sarasota Police Department Sergeant’s decadeslong public safety career and support for law enforcement.
“Jim DeNiro’s unwavering commitment to public safety and support for the brave men and women in law enforcement make him an exceptional candidate for this crucial role,” FPBA President John “Kaz” Kazanjian said. “His dedication to ensuring the well-being and security of our communities is commendable, and we are confident that he will be a strong advocate for law enforcement as a Sarasota County Commissioner.”
DeNiro retired from the Sarasota Police Department with the rank of Sergeant after a distinguished 30-year career that included criminal investigations, narcotics enforcement, patrol operations, traffic and marine units, emergency management, and service as Team Leader of the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit. He also oversaw personnel deployment, training costs, equipment purchases and unit budgets in supervisory roles.
DeNiro earned multiple commendations during his career. He received the Department’s Chief’s Award in 2016 for work with community partners and local agencies to combat human trafficking and support victims seeking to rebuild their lives. He also received the Sarasota Police Department’s Distinguished Service Award in 2002 after apprehending a bank robbery suspect while off duty. According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, DeNiro was eating a footlong tuna sandwich at A’s Giant Sandwiches when he spotted the suspect and took action.
Established in 1972, the FPBA represents officers in collective bargaining negotiations and advocates before state and local governments on issues related to public safety, wages and working conditions.
“I’m deeply honored to have the endorsement of the Florida Police Benevolent Association,” DeNiro said. “After spending my career working to protect Sarasota County families, I know public safety is the foundation of a strong community and a high quality of life. Sarasota County needs leadership that supports law enforcement, respects taxpayers, and keeps public safety front and center.”
