Florida GOP says Angie Nixon ‘smeared’ Charlie Kirk. She stands by her statements

A Jacksonville Democrat is being accused of attacking conservative activist Charlie Kirk and demonstrating what Republicans call “a bitterness and hatred unworthy of any elected official” as “Floridians are grieving.”

But she’s not backing down, despite the criticism.

The Florida GOP is accusing state Rep. Angie Nixon of House District 13 of “unleashing vile attacks during a time of mourning” against Kirk.

Republicans charge that “Nixon smeared Charlie Kirk’s name with hateful lies, calling him ‘homophobic, antisemitic, misogynistic…the list goes on and on‘ and even attacked Senator Rick Scott and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis for honoring Kirk, calling them ‘a tool of white supremacy and I DID NOT STUTTER!‘”

For Chair Evan Power, the critiques of Kirk are too much.

“For Angie Nixon to spew this level of hate while Floridians are grieving shows a disturbing lack of respect and judgment. Her words don’t just dishonor Charlie’s legacy, they dishonor her office,” Power said.

In the press release, the Florida GOP said Kirk “often reminded us of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision, that all people should be judged ‘not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character’” and “lived out his biblical beliefs, led with compassion, and held a special love for the Jewish people and the State of Israel.”

“That is why it is especially outrageous for Nixon to call him antisemitic. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself called Kirk a ‘Lion-Hearted Friend of Israel,’” the release added.

Asked for comment Wednesday morning, Nixon wasn’t backing down.

“Republicans in power are getting their cues from their billionaire donors to continually stoke the flames of fear and division, meanwhile they are allowed to raise our insurance costs and grocery prices while we continue to work harder and harder and our checks pay for less and less,” Nixon said.

“I will not sit by as Americans and people who have been placed on doxxing watchlists get attacked and lose their jobs for pushing back on Rick Scott and Jimmy Patronis seeking a national day of remembrance for Charlie Kirk who stated that ‘Jews control … the colleges, the nonprofits, the movies, Hollywood, all of it,’ and that Jewish philanthropy funding was ‘subsidizing your own demise by supporting institutions that breed antisemites and endorse genocidal killers,’” Nixon added.

These quotes were highlighted by the Jewish Herald Voice of Houston and The New York Times after Kirk’s death, and were uttered after the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks.

She wasn’t finished.

“He also stated that Black People ‘were actually better in the 1940s. It was bad. It was evil. But what happened? Something changed. They committed less crimes.’ He also stated, ‘If I see a Black pilot, I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified.’ Those things are racist and antisemitic,” Nixon added.

These quotes were reported by Buzzfeed and Snopes, respectively.

She then turned her attention to the two Republican legislators who want a day of remembrance for Kirk.

“Let me remind you. Rick Scott and Jimmy Patronis took millions in donations from these corporations, namely these insurance companies, that keep driving up our costs. They need to write policy around that.”
