Florida gas prices rise, fall before settling at $2.86 per gallon Monday

It’s 19 cents cheaper than a year ago.

Gas prices in Florida jumped 9 cents halfway through last week, reaching a state average of $2.94 per gallon on Wednesday, before falling 6 cents Sunday.

On Monday, the average fell another 2 cents to $2.86 per gallon — the same price point as on Feb. 8, according to AAA — The Auto Club Group.

The Monday morning average is also 2 cents more than a month ago, but 19 cents cheaper than this time last year.

“Price cycling is still driving these ups and down at the pump,” AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said in a statement.

“Prices drop, spike, then drift lower again, but overall, they remain below year-ago levels.”

The cheapest metropolitan market for Sunshine State motorists is the Crestview-Fort Walton Beach area, where the average price for a regular gallon of gas is $2.64, followed by Panama City ($2.67) and Pensacola ($2.74).

The most expensive gas, meanwhile, is in the West Palm Beach-Boca Raton area ($3.03), followed by Naples ($2.96) and Gainesville ($2.92).

The national average price is $2.93 per gallon, with the highest price being in California ($4.59) and the cheapest state to refuel being Iowa ($2.30).
