Florida International University has broken into the Top 50 public universities nationwide in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026 Best Colleges rankings, placing 46th among public institutions and 97th overall.

FIU maintained its No. 1 spot in the Social Mobility category, which recognizes schools that help economically disadvantaged students achieve academic and post-graduation success.

The Miami-Dade County-based university also ranked second among public universities in international business (and third among all schools), 11th for value, 16th for innovation and 45th for veterans.

“FIU is on a clear path to becoming a Top 30 public university by 2030,” FIU President Jeanette Nuñez said in a statement, referring to a promise she made in June to elevate the school’s standing within the next five years.

“We continue to lead in academics, research, student success, and upward economic mobility.”

FIU’s climbing trajectory is also reflected in other recent evaluations. Washington Monthly rated FIU No. 8 in its “Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars” guide, placing it first among all higher-ed schools in Florida.

Meanwhile, Niche ranked FIU 21st among Top Public Universities nationwide and 4th for Best Colleges in Florida, and Degree Choices rated the school in the top 20 for the economic return on interest graduates see.

FIU is also one of 21 U.S. institutions that simultaneously hold Carnegie R1 status, which designates very high research activity, and the Opportunity Colleges and Universities designation, a rare pairing that underscores research strength and student access.

Elizabeth Béjar, FIU Provost and Executive Vice President, said in a statement that the U.S. News rankings and similar assessments from other organizations highlight the school’s “strength in academic quality, research, and student success.”

“The U.S. News rankings once again show that FIU is providing an outstanding education,” she said, “creating opportunities that change lives and demonstrating our return on investment.”

FIU has approximately 55,000 students from all 50 states and more than 140 countries, plus an alumni network of more than 340,000. The school, which opened in 1972, offers more than 200 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels, including medicine and law.
