Enzian Theater features new docs on Orlando Sentinel hedge fund owner and missing Disney World animatronic

Maitland’s Enzian Theater is showing two attention-grabbing documentaries, with one detailing local newspapers’ struggles and another about the secret world of urban exploring at Disney World.

A sold-out one-time showing of the documentary “Stripped for Parts” is holding a special screening at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The documentary, made by two-time Academy Award nominee filmmaker Rick Goldsmith, tells the sad story of the hedge fund Alden Global Capital buying up newspapers — including the Orlando Sentinel and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel — across the country.

“Stripped for Parts is the story of a secretive hedge fund that is plundering what is left of America’s newspapers, and the journalists who are fighting back,” according to Enzian.

After the film, Sentinel columnist Scott Maxwell will moderate a Q&A conversation with Judith Smelser, President and General Manager of Central Florida Public Media, and Goldsmith himself.

The Orlando Sentinel Guild held a GoFundMe to raise money for the screening.

In addition, Disney fans who missed “Stolen Kingdom” at the Florida Film Festival earlier this year can catch it at the six showings Oct. 24-25 at the Enzian.

The documentary tells the story of the missing Buzzy animatronic — seriously, where is Buzzy? — and dives deeper into the case of Patrick Spikes, the ex-Disney worker who made headlines for sneaking in off-stage theme park areas and stealing items on the black market. The mystery even snares an NBA player.

But the documentary by Joshua Bailey goes deeper to cover the nostalgia of the first Disney World urban explorers. It also gives an early history in Disney blogging.

Bailey’s film has gotten strong reviews.

“There are your hardcore standard Disney fans, and then there is an entire subculture of Disney fans who want to go beyond that, breaking the rules and revealing how the sausage is made,” according to a Forbes story.

(Disclosure: This reporter was interviewed in the film as a Sentinel reporter covering Buzzy and Spikes.)

Bailey will do a Q&A after the film’s 6:30 p.m. screening on both days.
