D23: Disney leaders talk about what’s coming next to Disney World

In front of Disney super fans at the D23 Expo, the Walt Disney Co. teased new details late Saturday about its upcoming expansions coming to Disney World and its other theme parks.

In past years, Disney executives announced they were building major expansions, but on Saturday they released images and discussed some of the projects already in the works including Villains Land, the “Cars” rides and more.

Disney released conceptual art of the Villains land being built at the Magic Kingdom.

Visitors will get to ride on an “exhilarating” roller coaster featuring  the evil antagonist “Maleficent” from “Sleeping Beauty” and reimagined later by actress Angelina Jolie, Disney said.

“The Imagineering team teased that this coaster  will  include elements they’ve never attempted before on similar attractions, so it is set to be a truly groundbreaking project,” Disney said.

The second “headlining attraction” will be a dark ride with other Disney villains hosted by the Magic Mirror from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Disney said.

“You’ll  find the Magic Mirror where the Evil Queen keeps him in the catacombs beneath her pristine palace.  After making your way to him,  he’ll magically transport you into  his mystical Mirror Realm  to see things on the other side of the mirror.,” Disney said. “There,  in his ethereal realm, you’ll  be transfixed by  countless  Disney Villains conjured  in ways only the Magic Mirror can do.  A combination of special effects and physical set pieces  will bring his Mirror Realm – and these iconic Villains – to life.”

Disney has demolished Tom Sawyer’s Island and shut down the riverboat to make way for a new Magic Kingdom land based off the “Cars” movie.

One of the two rides is Cars Ridge Run Rally, a racing game with a backdrop of America’s national parks where you can expect to see a mountain and geysers leading to a sprint finish where “Lightning McQueen and Mater are covering the race live on Racing Sports Network,” Disney said.

The second ride will be Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along. Perhaps it’s the “Cars” version of the classic spinning tea tups? When the Daredevil Spin-Along opens, a “school-bus-sized animatronic” will be in the center of the attraction to host the “wildest demolition derby yet,” Disney said.

Next year at Hollywood Studios, Disney will open Monstropolis, the city  based on “Monsters, Inc” although Disney said it will open in phases because the marque roller coaster attraction won’t be finished in time.

Bad news for people who finally got “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” song out of their head. Disney leaders also shared details on the “Encanto” ride coming to Animal Kingdom.

“When you enter the house, you’ll  board a ride vehicle meant to represent the different pieces of furniture assembled by the power of Casita to carry you through the rooms,” Disney said. “They feel  lively and dynamic, reacting like characters themselves to the scenes unfolding around you, which feels so perfectly representative of what we felt from the film.”

Antonio, the Madrigal family member who speaks with animals in the movie, gives Disney an opportunity to make a rainforest scene on the attraction with 50 animals, the company said.

Disney also announced another surprise. It is going to fix the broken Yeti animatronic in the Expedition Everest ride at Animal Kingdom.

Reporter Jason Garcia once described it as “one of the most sophisticated animatronics Disney has ever built: a nearly 25-foot-tall, 20,000-pound abominable snowman powered by hydraulic cylinders with more potential thrust than a 747 jetliner” until the Yeti broke down more 16 years ago, annoying Disney fans.

“We’re bringing the Yeti back to life,” Disney said at D23.

Animal Kingdom is getting other major changes.

An Indiana Jones-themed attraction will star an animatronic based off the real Harrison Ford’s character.

There’s more star power coming to the parks.

Jamie Lee Curtis and Bryan Cranston are going to be the new voices for the parents in A Carousel of Progress upgrade debuting next year. The Magic Kingdom ride plays a big part of Disney history because it was part of the  1964–1965 New York World’s Fair.

Disney Cruise Line also showed off the Disney Believe which sets sail late next year and will be themed with Encanto, Frozen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Moana and The Little Mermaid.
