Well, it was a mixed bag of results last week for us on the breakdown of the races we looked at for Colonial Downs. We put together picks in each leg of the late P5 with the goal of giving our readers some insight into race flow, pace, and advantages some horses may have over others.
You decide which horses you like, put our thoughts and your thoughts together, and we can make some magic. So here is how it all shook out.
Colonial Downs — Saturday, March 14th
Race 6
Our top pick #3 Running Away scratched, and that left our next selection to take up 2nd place for the effort. Not a start that set off any fireworks.
Race 7
The chalk and our #1 Prime Power BRISnet.com top pick, #6 Eunomia, did the job as expected and locked up the top spot. A good horse to key some other picks around. We also had the #2 Sultry Lass on our radar, and she finished a nice 2nd place run.
Race 8
This Oaks prep race once again saw our #1 Prime Power BRISnet.com pick complete her assignment, as #3 Battle of Rouge locked up a spot on the 1st Friday in May for the Kentucky Oaks. We also zeroed in on the #1 Dazzling Dame for the 2nd spot, and she did just that to complete the exacta.
Race 9
There were plenty of fireworks in this Derby prep race, and we had the #7 Incredibolt as our upset pick. The runner paid $14.40 for 1st place and locked up a place in the 1st Saturday’s Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs. The #2 Grittiness was also a horse we liked to close, and he delivered for a big price at $24.60 in 2nd place. This runner was talked up in our podcast on Saturday with myself and partner John Kostin.
Race 10
The #1 Prime Power from BRISnet.com did it for the third time in the sequence, when #7 Maclean’s Rook took top honors and paid $5.80 to close out the last leg of the P5, which returned a decent—but chalky—$362.45.
Looking Ahead: Big Stakes Weekend
Next week, the road to the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby continues at Turfway Park and Fair Grounds. On Saturday, the Jeff Ruby Stakes will be for the boys and the Bourbonette will be for the fillies at Turfway Park. In addition, the Louisiana Derby for the boys and the Fair Grounds Oaks for the fillies will be run at Fair Grounds Racecourse. An exciting weekend of racing is on tap, to be sure.
Final Thoughts and Where to Follow
The takeaway from last weekend: be sure to read our breakdown in our weekly article in Sports Talk Florida, then follow up with our Saturday podcast where myself and John Kostin take a deeper look at the races after scratches and any late changes that may affect the sequence. In addition, the #1 Prime Power from BRISnet.com continues to warrant your attention.
You can catch our lineup of shows all week on Sports Talk Media Network, as well as multiple streaming apps and social channels.
Closing Stretch
As we check out for now, remember to bet smart and cheer hard, because fast horses can lead to serious fun.
