While some Republicans might be checking for oppo on potential Democratic candidates for Governor, Byron Donalds suggests it might be better to check for signs of life.
During an appearance on “Clay and Buck,” the Naples Congressman said he doesn’t care who he runs against if he gets the nomination next August given how Ron DeSantis has left the opposition party.
“Gov. DeSantis, during his leadership, he’s really put the Florida Democratic Party on life support. They’re in bad shape over there. They know they’re in bad shape over there,” Donalds argued.
That’s more charitable than the current Governor, who has described the Democrats as a “dead, rotten carcass.”
Polling released this week by the University of North Florida shows Donalds well-positioned for a General Election if he wins the Primary, assuming Democrats nominate former U.S. Rep. David Jolly or Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.
Donalds gets 45% support against Jolly and Demings, each at 34%.
“Whatever the Democrats, whoever they choose to throw at us, so be it. We’ll take care of them,” Donalds promised.
UNF’s poll found First Lady Casey DeSantis actually outperforming Donalds if she runs.
DeSantis draws 47% of the vote against Jolly, who gets 34%, and Demings, who gets 36%.
Donalds says he’s going “county by county” and “seeing people day in and day out,” offering a warning to any potential opponent.
“Whoever else decides that they’re going to run and jump in, they got a lot of work to catch up on and it’s not going to be easy,” Donalds said.
The First Lady is a potential candidate, as is Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, who says he will decide “soonish” about running.
Meanwhile, former House Speaker Paul Renner is already in the race.
A recent St. Pete Polls survey shows Donalds with 39% support against Renner and Collins, each of whom have less than 4% support.
