Gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds has another big name to tout among his supporters, with the “full support” nod from Elon Musk Wednesday night.
Musk, in response to a Feb. 25 post from Donalds announcing his candidacy on Fox News, congratulated Donalds, adding, “you certainly have my full support.”
Donalds responded Thursday morning.
“Thank you @elonmusk! I am honored to have your full support,” he wrote.
“I’m truly honored to have Elon’s support. His endorsement reflects the momentum behind our campaign’s mission to make the American Dream more achievable in Florida by lowering costs for families, cutting taxes, unleashing innovation, and putting the future back in the hands of the American people, not government bureaucracy,” Donalds added later in a press release. “Together, we will deliver bold, America First leadership for Florida and ensure our state continues to lead the nation in freedom, economic growth, and opportunity for every family.”
The Musk endorsement is timely, even if the post it was in response to isn’t.
Azoria CEO James Fishback has said he’s planning to run for Governor. He’s a former advisor to Musk, but has been a frequent critic of the H1B program used to import skilled labor from other countries on an as-needed basis, which Musk has used to bring in thousands of workers for Tesla.
Musk’s endorsement closes the door on any speculation that Musk might bankroll a Fishback bid.
Musk’s nod came just a day after U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas offered Donalds his endorsement. And it adds to the biggest endorsement the Republican has received to date, from President Donald Trump.
Donalds, a current U.S. Representative from Naples, appears to be the frontrunner for the GOP nomination, and the Governor’s race writ large.
A recent St. Pete Polls survey shows Donalds with 39% support against former House Speaker Paul Renner and Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, each with less than 4% support, Florida Politics previously reported.
And no matter which Republican earns the nod for Florida’s top elected state job, they’re likely to win. A late October poll from the University of North Florida showed Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis, who has not entered the race, would best David Jolly, one of two Democrats running, with 47% of the vote compared to 34%. Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, who is also running, would collect 36% of the vote.
Donalds, in that poll, would collect 45% of the poll, while Jolly and Demings would each post 34% of the vote.
And Donalds has the fundraising edge across the board, with more than $31 million already, much more than any other declared candidate.
The Musk endorsement also comes after U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican and close ally of Gov. Ron DeSantis, also backed Donalds this week. While that doesn’t at first glance seem to be all that impactful, Roy’s support for Donalds is salient against the backdrop of his relationship with DeSantis. Collins, as DeSantis’ Lt. Governor, is expected to eventually land the Governor’s endorsement, a nod to what has been an unspoken but otherwise obvious feud between DeSantis and Trump.
But Roy and Donalds also boast a relationship. Amid a protected process for picking a House Speaker in 2023, Roy promoted the Naples Republican as an option, casting the first of several votes for Donalds over the course of days, though the job ultimately went to Kevin McCarthy.
