Byron Donalds defends congressional redistricting as necessary response to ‘radical’ Democrats

Gubernatorial hopeful Byron Donalds continues to sing the praises of Florida’s latest congressional redistricting, saying Gov. Ron DeSantis got it right with his map during a Fox Business interview.

He also hammered critics of Florida creating a map where Republicans could win 24 out of 28 congressional seats, saying complaints are hypocritical.

“The Democrats were like, oh, this is not fair, blah, blah, blah. They’ve been doing it for years too, and everybody knows it,” the Naples Congressman told interviewer Stuart Varney.

Donalds cited examples of Democratic excesses in making his point that “Democrats have been radical when it comes to gerrymandering all across the United States” in the last two decades.

“In the state of New York, two, three years ago, four years ago now, they wanted to just fundamentally get rid of five Republican seats in New York with a crazy gerrymander. Massachusetts has always been gerrymandered. If you look at Illinois, they use Chicago as a bed for just creating Democrat seats that run into the suburbs and to rural areas. They’ve been doing this for years,” Donalds argued.

He believes that in contrast, Republicans are simply trying to “look at our maps and make sure that our congressional maps are reflective of the political culture and structure in our states.”
