Johnson has been one of the more consistent standouts during camp, showing the quickness, route-running ability, and confidence that made him an intriguing player entering his second season. After making an impact as a rookie, he is now looking to earn an even larger role in Tampa Bay’s offense.
Johnson Building on Promising Rookie Season
Johnson’s rookie numbers did not immediately jump off the page, but his production came in a limited role. He finished his first season with 28 receptions for 322 yards and five touchdowns, showing flashes of the playmaking ability the Buccaneers saw when they selected him.
The biggest question entering 2026 was whether Johnson could turn those flashes into consistent contributions. Early in training camp, he has looked like a player ready for that opportunity.

One of Johnson’s biggest strengths has been his ability to create separation. His quickness off the line and sharp route running make him difficult for defenders to stay with, especially in short and intermediate areas of the field.
That skill set fits well with what Tampa Bay is trying to build offensively. With a new-look receiver room featuring Chris Godwin, Emeka Egbuka, and Jalen McMillan, Johnson provides another dynamic option capable of creating mismatches.
Opportunity Is Growing After Major Changes at Receiver
The Buccaneers’ receiver room looks much different after Evans’ departure. While replacing a player who spent more than a decade as the face of the franchise is impossible, Tampa Bay has several young receivers preparing to take on bigger responsibilities.
Johnson is one of those players who could benefit most from the increased opportunity. His performance during training camp has shown the Buccaneers that he can compete for meaningful snaps rather than simply providing depth.
Johnson Could Become an Important Piece of Tampa Bay’s Offense
The Buccaneers do not need Tez Johnson to replace Evans. Instead, they need him to embrace his own role and become another reliable weapon for Baker Mayfield.
If Johnson continues performing at the level he has shown during training camp, he could become one of the most valuable pieces in Tampa Bay’s young receiver group. His development could play a major role in determining how successful the Buccaneers’ offense is in 2026.
