Mayfield Secures Historic Deal With Tampa Bay
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced a landmark agreement with quarterback Baker Mayfield, finalizing a multi‑year contract extension that makes him the highest‑paid player in franchise history. The four‑year deal, including a three‑year extension, keeps Mayfield in Tampa Bay through the 2029 season and underscores the organization’s belief in the quarterback who has reshaped the team’s identity since arriving in 2023.
Mayfield’s production has been elite. Over three seasons, he ranks third in the NFL in passing yards with 12,237 and second in passing touchdowns with 95. His efficiency has surged as well, completing 66.3 percent of his passes and posting a 97.4 passer rating across 51 starts.
Leadership That Redefined the Franchise
Buccaneers Owner and Co‑Chairman Joel Glazer emphasized Mayfield’s impact, saying his arrival “marked an important new chapter for our organization.” Glazer added that Mayfield has become “the unquestioned leader of our franchise,” noting his competitive spirit, resilience and commitment to winning. He also highlighted the community presence of Mayfield and his wife Emily, saying the organization is “thrilled their family will continue to call Tampa Bay home for years to come.”
Mayfield’s leadership has translated into results. He has guided Tampa Bay to two NFC South titles, a postseason win and two Pro Bowl selections. He holds single‑season franchise records for completion percentage and passer rating and is the only quarterback in team history with multiple Pro Bowl appearances.
A Quarterback Who Sets the Tone
General Manager Jason Licht praised Mayfield’s preparation and accountability, calling him “the heartbeat of this team.” Licht said Mayfield’s toughness and ability to deliver in big moments define his value, but his daily leadership is what truly sets him apart.
Head Coach Todd Bowles echoed that sentiment, saying Mayfield’s energy and confidence fuel the locker room. “His belief in himself and this team never wavers,” Bowles said, noting that Mayfield sets the tone every day.
A Career Still Ascending
Mayfield’s 2024 season was the best of his career, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns while completing more than 70 percent of his passes. He became just the fourth player in NFL history to reach 4,000 passing yards and 40 touchdowns with a 70‑percent completion rate in a single season.
Off the field, Mayfield’s charitable work continues to grow. Through the Baker and Emily Mayfield Foundation, the couple has generated over $600,000 for early learning programs in Hillsborough County and supported multiple community initiatives across Tampa Bay.
