The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their preseason with a promising 24‑13 win over the New York Jets, powered by two young quarterbacks who made the most of their unexpected opportunities. With Baker Mayfield and Jake Browning sidelined, third‑stringer Connor Bazelak and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels handled all snaps under center and delivered a steady, encouraging performance for a team evaluating its depth.
Bazelak Steady Early as Bucs Adjust Without Starters
Browning was expected to start, but a back issue suffered during Tuesday’s joint practice kept him out. That left Bazelak to run the offense from the opening series, and he responded with composure. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 72 yards, showing command of the system and patience in the pocket.
On Tampa Bay’s third drive, Bazelak nearly connected with third‑round pick Ted Hurst III for a touchdown, but Jets rookie Mory Bamba made a strong defensive play, knocking the ball loose in the end zone. The Buccaneers settled for a 23‑yard Chase McLaughlin field goal, taking a 10‑6 lead and building momentum behind their young quarterback.
Daniels Delivers Dynamic Second‑Half Spark
Daniels entered for the first possession of the second half and immediately injected energy into the offense. His debut drive ended with Josh Williams’ 12‑yard touchdown run, putting Tampa Bay ahead 17‑13. Daniels continued to show poise and mobility, completing 10 of 15 passes for 111 yards while adding nine rushing yards and a one‑yard touchdown with 3:24 remaining.
The former Kansas standout looked comfortable in rhythm throws and decisive in the red zone. His late touchdown run capped the scoring and sealed the win, earning praise from head coach Todd Bowles.
“He was calm under pressure and he let the system work for him, as opposed to just trying to make a play and be seen,” Bowles said. “He did some very good things tonight from a poise standpoint.”
Jets Rookie Impresses Despite Injury Scare
Bamba, who broke up the near‑touchdown pass to Hurst and finished with four passes defensed, briefly exited in the third quarter to be checked for a head injury. He returned in the fourth and continued to play aggressively in coverage.
