Buccaneers and Rays face stadium issues

Bucs Renovation Takes Priority

The Tampa Sports Authority made its position clear. The board wants Raymond James Stadium and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the front of the funding line. The Bucs are seeking a major renovation that carries a price tag of about $1 billion. Negotiations continue, but early discussions include the team covering roughly one‑third of the cost, with public dollars filling the rest. Board members said the county must understand the limits of available money. They stressed that the Bucs are the current tenant and that Raymond James must remain the top priority.

Rays Stadium Talks Add Pressure

At the same time, the Rays are pushing forward with their own stadium plan. The team wants $976 million in public funding to build a new ballpark in Tampa. That puts both franchises in direct competition for the same pool of taxpayer dollars. Every dollar spent on one project reduces what is available for the other. The Tampa Sports Authority signaled concern about stretching public resources too thin.

Board Split on Sending a Warning

The board voted to draft a letter to Hillsborough County leaders. The message: protect the Bucs deal first. Not everyone agreed. Tampa City Councilmember Alan Clendenin cast the lone vote against the motion. He argued the authority should not act as the Buccaneers’ advocate. He said the board must represent the entire sports landscape, not just one franchise. The letter will be drafted, reviewed, and then considered for approval.

Two Stadium Projects, One Funding Reality

The NFL carries enormous weight in any market. Stadium dollars follow that reality. The Bucs want a modernized Raymond James Stadium. The Rays want a new home to secure their long‑term future in Tampa. Both projects are expensive. Both require public money. The Tampa Sports Authority is signaling that only one can move forward without delay. The Bucs come first. The Rays will need to wait for clarity on what remains.
