Former Rep. Bobby Olszewski has earned endorsements from three MLB stars for his new leadership book, “Grand Slam Leadership: Using Baseball Principles and Strategies to Win in Business and Life.”
The book combines Olszewski’s background in public service, academia and business with his lifelong passion for America’s pastime, earning nods from baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, World Series champion Johnny Damon and former MLB All-Star and current Fox Sports analyst A.J. Pierzynski.
Larkin called Olszewski’s latest work “a powerful book about winning the right way,” while Damon said readers could find “a championship mindset on every page.”
Pierzynski said the book is “as strategic and honest as the game” of baseball.
Olszewski got the idea for his book from years of conversations with business leaders, students and community members regarding shared principles between strong teams on the baseball diamond and the organizations far removed from home plate.
“Whether in public office, business leadership, or community service, the fundamentals are the same,” Olszewski said. “In baseball, the game can change on a single pitch. In business, a single decision can shift an entire culture. Leadership is having the discipline to prepare, the humility to listen, and the courage to swing when the opportunity comes.”
Olszewski, who represented House District 44 covering west Orange County in the Legislature, also served as a Winter Garden City Commissioner and has spent decades working in communications, public engagement and leadership strategy. He has taught as an adjunct professor for more than twenty years and holds a Ph.D. in business administration, along with two master’s degrees in management and communication.
The 55-chapter book blends short stories from baseball history with modern leadership examples, giving readers practical actions they can apply immediately. Each chapter focuses on a fundamental principle of the game, including strategic pitching, communication signals, clubhouse culture and more. It also ties baseball skills to strategies for real-world leadership challenges faced by executives, entrepreneurs, educators and public servants.
The book includes a heartfelt tribute to Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, Olszewski’s childhood hero. Carter’s integrity, faith and competitive spirit shaped not only his baseball career, but also the way he inspired teammates and communities, Olszewski writes in his book.
Olszewski said his time in public office reinforced many of the themes woven through the book, including the need for preparation, accountability and clear communication during critical decision-making.
“Public service teaches you that leadership is not about spotlight moments,” Olszewski said. “It’s about showing up every day with purpose, just like baseball players who grind through every inning, every game, all season long.”
A lifelong Cleveland Indians/Guardians fan, Olszewski continues to advocate for the dream of bringing Major League Baseball to the Orlando region, where he lives with his wife and daughter.
His book is available now on Amazon in paperback, hardcover and Kindle editions. The Kindle edition will be available at no cost Jan. 5-7.
