Alex Fernandez backs Richard Lamondin for CD 27

A second elected official from Miami-Dade County’s most cinematic municipality is getting behind Democratic entrepreneur Richard Lamondin for Florida’s 27th Congressional District.

Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez, whose 84% share of the vote in November broke a city record, just endorsed Lamondin as his preferred candidate to unseat Republican U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar this year.

Lamondin, he said, has “the discipline, message, and credibility” to flip the CD 27 seat blue.

“Richard represents the next generation of leadership Miami-Dade needs,” Fernandez said in a statement.

“He built a business from nothing that delivers real environmental and economic benefits, understands how the economy actually works, and is clear-eyed about the challenges families are facing.”

The nod from Fernandez adds to another Lamondin received this month from Miami Beach Commissioner Laura Dominguez. Lamondin’s growing roster of state and local leaders backing his campaign also includes state Sen. Shevrin Jones, state Rep. Kevin Chambliss, Miami-Dade School Board member Luisa Santos, former Miami Beach Commissioner David Richardson and former Miami Commissioner Ken Russell.

Lamondin said he is “honored to earn” Fernandez’s support.

“Alex has shown what it looks like to govern seriously — to show up, make tough decisions, and stay focused on the people you serve,” Lamondin said in a statement. “Miami-Dade voters are looking for leaders who are prepared for what’s ahead, and I’m grateful to have Alex standing with us.”

The endorsement comes as Lamondin’s campaign posts strong fundraising numbers. Newly filed federal reports show him nearly matching Salazar’s fourth-quarter haul while outraising his Democratic Primary rivals, CPA Alex Fornino and former prosecutor Robin Peguero.

CD 27, one of three Florida districts that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has highlighted as “in play,” covers Miami, Coral Gables, Cutler Bay, Key Biscayne, Pinecrest, North Bay Village, South Miami, West Miami and several unincorporated areas.

Salazar has held the seat since January 2021.
