Calijah Kancey’s Return Could Be the Buccaneers’ Biggest Defensive Boost
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spent much of the 2025 season searching for answers along their defensive front. One of the biggest solutions may already be on the roster. Calijah Kancey’s absence was impossible to ignore after another injury‑shortened campaign, and his return stands as one of the most important developments for Tampa Bay entering 2026.
Kancey, a former first‑round pick, played only two games last season, leaving the Buccaneers without one of their most explosive interior pass rushers. His quickness and penetration were central to Todd Bowles’ defensive design, and losing him early in Week 2 created a noticeable void.
Tampa Bay Could Get Its Missing Piece Back
ESPN’s Ben Solak highlighted Kancey as one of the NFL’s biggest X‑Factors for 2026, noting how his presence changes the entire complexion of Tampa Bay’s defensive front. Through his first two seasons, Kancey paired perfectly with Vita Vea, offering speed, leverage and disruptive interior pressure. When he went down last year, the Buccaneers’ pass rush lost its spark.
The challenge, of course, is availability. Kancey has shown the talent to become a major difference‑maker, but injuries have prevented him from building sustained momentum. If he can stay healthy, his return could solve one of Tampa Bay’s most persistent defensive issues.
The Buccaneers Still Believe in Kancey
Tampa Bay demonstrated its confidence in Kancey earlier this offseason by picking up his fifth‑year option, keeping him under contract through 2027. The move came despite Kancey missing 23 of his first 51 possible regular‑season games. The Buccaneers clearly believe his upside remains worth the investment.
Kancey’s biggest battle now is staying on the field. He missed three games as a rookie, five more in 2024, and 15 last season due to a torn pectoral muscle. The setback was particularly frustrating because Kancey entered 2025 predicting he could lead the NFL in sacks if fully healthy.
The Production Shows Why the Bucs Are Waiting
Even with the injuries, Kancey has produced when available. He led the Buccaneers with 7.5 sacks in 2024 despite missing significant time and added four sacks as a rookie. Those flashes explain why Tampa Bay remains eager to see what he can accomplish across a full season.
A healthy Kancey would give Bowles another weapon to attack offensive lines and elevate the entire defensive front. His return could be the difference between a good defense and a disruptive one.
