Sustainable fibres producer Spinnova names Janne Poranen as CEO

Spinnova, a Finnish company specialised in producing cellulose fibres free from harmful substances using paper, carton, cotton, leather and agricultural waste, has named its co-founder Janne Poranen as CEO. He takes over from Tuomas Oijala, who announced he was stepping down as CEO at the beginning of March.

Janne Poranen – Spinnova

Poranen has a PhD in Physics, and had previously been in charge of Spinnova between 2014 and 2022, subsequently serving as chairman of the board of directors. “Our organisation is currently focusing on making fibre production profitable, with a view to increasing output on an industrial scale,” said Poranen.

The new appointment comes after a pivotal year for Spinnova. In March 2024, the company announced it wanted to concentrate on selling its manufacturing technology to other industrial partners. This was followed by a financially challenging period, as production costs soared.

In 2024, the company generated revenue of €762,000. A staggering downturn compared to the €10 million generated in 2023, when Spinnova supplied industrial equipment to Finnish company Woodspin, a producer jointly set up by Spinnova with paper pulp specialist Suzano.

At the end of February, Suzano said it no longer intended to invest in a continued collaboration with Spinnova, following a reorientation of its business strategy. This led it to negotiate exclusive rights for the exploitation of the Woodspin factory. The latter is said to be able to produce 1,000 tons of fibre per year, an output capacity that still needs to be industrially exploited.

Spinnova

Spinnova was founded in 2014, and made a name for itself in 2020 by producing handbags for Bergans of Norway. The following year, it won the ANDAM Innovation Prize. It has also launched several high-profile collaborations, for example the Terrex hooded T-shirt with Adidas, as well as developing products for Puma, The North Face, Marimekko and Bestseller.

Curated and designed by 2050+, and running until April 6, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of the bag’s evolution, from its origins in the House’s archives to its contemporary reinvention.

Introduced in 1947, the Gucci Bamboo bag has remained a hallmark of the House. At the heart of the exhibition is a dialogue between nature and human ingenuity, paying tribute to bamboo as a material of strength, resilience, and elegance.

Bamboo holds deep cultural significance in China, symbolizing humility, nobility, and perseverance—values long reflected in art, literature, and philosophy. The exhibition honors this legacy while exploring how bamboo has been transformed into an artistic and design medium.

LVMH creates joint leadership for La Samaritaine and Le Bon Marché

LVMH has introduced a shared governance structure for La Samaritaine and Le Bon Marché, aiming to strengthen both businesses in an increasingly dynamic retail landscape.

Patrice Wagner – LVMH

“Effective immediately, a single leadership team is being established under the continued presidency of Patrice Wagner, who will now oversee both Le Bon Marché and La Samaritaine,” the group stated, emphasizing its intention to give La Samaritaine fresh momentum.

Wagner has led Le Bon Marché since 2010 and assumed additional responsibility for the luxury luggage brand Rimowa in 2021. He previously held senior roles at Galeries Lafayette Berlin and KaDeWe in Germany.

The company confirmed that Catherine Newey, who became managing director of La Samaritaine in 2023, will retain her position while also serving as deputy managing director of the Le Bon Marché Group. Newey is well-acquainted with Le Bon Marché, having served there from 2017 to 2024 as commercial director and later store director, where she led brand positioning, customer experience, and retail performance.

“A new organizational structure will be rolled out gradually,” LVMH added, “focusing on securing consistent, long-term growth at La Samaritaine while preserving the distinct identity of each house within the group.”

The company said the unified leadership approach “builds on the individual strengths and distinct characters of these two iconic maisons, which can now evolve together: La Samaritaine, with its historic location at the heart of Paris, and Le Bon Marché, celebrated for its Parisian identity, creativity, and customer experience.”

During its full-year earnings presentation in January, LVMH confirmed that La Samaritaine had been removed from the Duty-Free Shops (DFS) network. It noted that DFS remained “below its pre-COVID 2019 levels,” particularly affected by currency exchange fluctuations.

“La Samaritaine’s operations were primarily focused on Chinese tourists, and we are shifting it out of DFS to broaden its appeal,” explained Jean-Jacques Guiony, chief financial officer of LVMH.

The Parisian department store reopened in 2021 following a 16-year closure and a €750 million renovation. However, the absence of Chinese tourism has made rebuilding its customer base challenging.

Birkenstock opens concept store in Shanghai

German footwear brand Birkenstock has unveiled its pop-up in Shanghai as a permanent Zhangyuan Concept Store.

Birkenstock London. – Birkenstock

Dating back to 1882, Zhangyuan is a cultural landmark known for its beautifully preserved shikumen lane houses and its unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. The newly restored district seamlessly integrates its rich legacy with contemporary urban life. The concept store is designed to honor the city’s architectural heritage while embracing Birkenstock’s minimalist aesthetic.

The space is characterized by a palette of muted tones and natural materials. Locally crafted furniture, including benches, floor lamps, and armchairs, reflects Shanghainese influences, while Art Deco elements are woven into the display fixtures. Traditional roof tiles are integrated into the 1774 display rack, and a striking art installation—crafted from layered transparent silk with hand-embroidered Chinese motifs—pays tribute to the brand’s iconic footbed.

The store houses Birkenstock’s timeless classics and its premium 1774 product line. To mark the opening, the store will debut the Boro Collection, a collaboration with designer Jesse Leyva inspired by the Japanese art of textile mending.

Likewise, to celebrate the opening, Birkenstock has partnered with Pure Yoga to offer an exclusive foot health experience, emphasizing the connection between movement and well-being.

Most recently, in November, Birkenstock opened its latest U.S. retail store in the heart of Boston’s historic Newbury Street, joining the brand’s growing retail footprint.
