Diamondbacks Ownership’s Quest For Funding  A Renovated Stadium Is In Politicians’ Hands

Published

on

Diamondbacks’ lease ends in three seasons.

The stadium game is playing out in Phoenix where state representatives are trying to put together a financial package that would go into the renovation of the Phoenix home stadium of Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks franchise. The city of Phoenix and Maricopa County lawmakers are not yet on board with state legislators. But the stadium game is a messy procedure generally and it takes time to get a funding package together. Here is some background. The Arizona Diamondbacks ownership’s lease with the municipally owned Phoenix stadium ends after the 2027 season. For years, there have been fights between Diamondbacks owners and local officials about the maintenance of the facility. The Arizona governor is sitting on the sidelines but Katie Hobbs wants to see the team stay in Phoenix. In 2024, Arizona lost a major league team as the Tempe-based National Hockey League franchise was sold to Utah investor Ryan Smith who moved the business to Salt Lake City. The hockey franchise was unable to secure an arena in the Phoenix arena.

“The governor wants the Diamondbacks to stay in Phoenix. As with any bill, the governor’s office is engaging with stakeholders and legislators, but it’s too early in the process to comment on any legislation,” said Christian Slater, Hobbs’ spokesman. In 2019, Arizona Diamondbacks’ ownership listened to a Henderson, Nevada pitch to build a ballpark for the Major League Baseball franchise. Diamondbacks ownership was looking for a new or renovated Phoenix stadium and needed to interject some urgency among Phoenix area politicians to help fund a renovation of its existing stadium or build a new baseball park. Henderson is part of the Las Vegas market. Nothing came of the talks and no other area in the Phoenix region seems interested in building a stadium. The Diamondbacks stadium saga continues.

Mets infielder Nick Madrigal dislocates non-throwing shoulder in spring game against Nationals

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — New York Mets infielder Nick Madrigal dislocated his non-throwing shoulder Sunday in a spring training game against the Washington Nationals.

Madrigal is fighting for a roster spot with the Mets, and it’s unclear how much time he’ll miss after the injury to his left shoulder. The 27-year-old was playing shortstop and charged a grounder up the middle, firing to first base before falling to the grass.

He’ll undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury, according to MLB.com.

Madrigal was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft and has played five seasons in the big leagues with the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs. He signed a one-year deal with the Mets in January after being non-tendered by the Cubs.

Monday’s Red Sox-Yankees spring game time moved because of expected rain, foreshadowing Rays’ season

Published

on

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The start time for Monday’s spring training game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox has been moved because of expected heavy rainfall, foreshadowing what the Tampa Bay Rays might have to deal with this year as they play a season outdoors.

The Red Sox announced on Sunday that Monday’s game at JetBlue Park will be moved from 1:05 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. EST because of significant rainfall expected earlier in the day in the Fort Myers area.

The game between the Atlanta Braves and Baltimore Orioles at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota on Monday also was moved from 1:05 p.m. to 4:05 p.m. due to the weather forecast.

The Rays are preparing for a regular season with home games at Tampa’s Steinbrenner Field, the spring training base of the Yankees. Hurricane Milton ripped the roof off St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field on Oct. 9, leaving the Rays’ usual home stadium unusable for at least 2025.

Steinbrenner Field, which has about 11,000 seats, is exposed to weather, unlike the Trop. Florida summers are known for thunderstorms in the afternoon and early evening.
