Rays are on a mission as they host the ALCS Gam1

The 2026 Rays Believe They’re Built for October

The Tampa Bay Rays were watching the Game 5 of the ALDS not concerned about who emerges from Saturday night’s winner-take-all clash between the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox.

After a convincing sweep of the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series, Tampa Bay believes its versatile style of play can translate against any opponent standing between the club and the World Series.

The Rays used power, speed, elite pitching, defensive excellence and situational baseball throughout the series against New York. It was the same formula that produced 98 regular-season victories and helped Tampa Bay advance to the American League Championship Series in dominant fashion.

Rays Have Multiple Ways to Win

Manager Kevin Cash said Tampa Bay’s biggest strength is its ability to adjust to different situations during a game.

When facing dominant starters, the Rays are comfortable manufacturing runs through aggressive baserunning, bunts and pressure on opposing defenses. On other nights, they can rely on power throughout the lineup.

That flexibility was evident throughout the Yankees series. Tampa Bay won close games, capitalized on mistakes and consistently executed fundamental baseball when the moment demanded it.

The approach has become part of the organization’s identity and remains one of the primary reasons the Rays are once again playing deep into October.

Rasmussen Setting the Tone

The postseason began with a masterpiece from Drew Rasmussen.

The All-Star right-hander carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning of Game 1 against New York, leading Tampa Bay to a 1-0 victory and immediately shifting momentum in the series.

Rasmussen appears to be the favorite for the Game 1 assignment when the ALCS opens Monday, although Cash stopped short of making an official announcement.

With eight days of rest available, the right-hander gives Tampa Bay a major advantage entering the next round.

Unexpected Heroes Fuel Sweep

While the Rays received expected contributions from stars across the roster, several unlikely sources helped finish off New York.

A decisive Game 3 victory featured home runs from Victor Mesa Jr. and Ryan Vilade, players who combined for just 25 homers during the regular season.

At the same time, Tampa Bay continued to pressure the Yankees defensively, forcing mistakes and turning routine opportunities into scoring chances.

The result was a series sweep against one of baseball’s highest-spending organizations.

Payroll Gap Doesn’t Matter

The Yankees entered the season with one of Major League Baseball’s largest payrolls at approximately $303 million, while Tampa Bay opened the year near $91 million.

For the Rays, however, payroll comparisons have become background noise.

Cash emphasized that the clubhouse remains focused on winning games rather than financial comparisons. Tampa Bay’s roster has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to outperform expectations by relying on development, versatility and execution.

Rays were winners against either Cleveland or Chicago in the regular season

Tampa Bay posted strong regular-season results against both potential opponents.

The Rays went 5-1 against Cleveland and 4-2 versus Chicago during the regular season, though postseason baseball often creates an entirely different challenge.

Regardless of the matchup, the club welcomes the opportunity.

After dispatching the Yankees and earning several extra days of rest, Tampa Bay enters the ALCS healthy, confident and convinced its complete style of baseball can succeed against anyone.
