Winfield Expected to Miss Two to Four Weeks
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be without Antoine Winfield Jr. for their Thursday night matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Winfield suffered a rib injury late in Sunday’s 17-14 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and head coach Todd Bowles confirmed the severity Monday afternoon.
“We won’t have Winfield Thursday,” Bowles said. “He has a slight rib fracture. He’ll be out two to four weeks, probably, from what I’m hearing.”
The timing is difficult for Tampa Bay, which has only three days to prepare before facing one of the league’s most physical and explosive teams.
Buccaneers Must Navigate Winfield’s Absence
Bowles did not indicate whether the Buccaneers will consider placing Winfield on injured reserve. If they choose that route, Winfield would be required to miss at least four games. The decision will likely hinge on how quickly the team believes he can recover.
For now, Tampa Bay knows its defensive leader will not be available Thursday, leaving the secondary to adjust on a short week.
Melifonwu Expected to Step In
Ifeatu Melifonwu stepped into the lineup after Winfield exited Sunday’s game. The sixth‑year safety played his first four defensive snaps with Tampa Bay against Green Bay after previously appearing only on special teams.
The Buccaneers added Melifonwu to the 53‑man roster last week after he exhausted his game‑day elevations. With Winfield sidelined, his role is expected to expand significantly. Bowles confirmed the plan directly: “Iffy.”
Short Week Adds Pressure for Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers’ defense must regroup quickly. Bowles praised the secondary’s tackling and execution on third down but acknowledged coverage misplays that allowed Green Bay to escape long‑yardage situations.
Offensively, Bowles pointed to penalties and drive‑killing setbacks as the biggest issue. He said the team must find ways to get receivers Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin Jr. more involved, despite defensive adjustments and setbacks that have limited opportunities.
Dallas Presents a Major Challenge
Bowles described the Cowboys as one of the most physically gifted teams Tampa Bay will face this season. He highlighted their size, playmakers, and depth on both sides of the ball, noting their All‑Pro quarterback, strong defensive front, and tight end versatility.
With Winfield out and a short week of preparation, Tampa Bay faces a steep challenge Thursday night.
