Buccaneers are getting ready for Dallas

Bowles Confirms Winfield Jr. Out Two to Four Weeks

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles delivered tough news on Tuesday, confirming that safety Antoine Winfield Jr. will miss Thursday’s game due to a rib fracture. Bowles said Winfield is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks. He added that the team is still awaiting imaging on linebacker SirVocea Dennis’ foot injury before determining his status.

Bowles noted that Ifeatu Melifonwu will step into the starting role at safety. He also addressed coverage issues that allowed Green Bay to escape poor field position, saying simply, “We misplayed the coverage.”

Evaluating Defensive Performance and Calijah Kancey’s Growth

Bowles praised the secondary’s discipline against Green Bay, emphasizing strong tackling and execution on third down. When asked about defensive lineman Calijah Kancey’s season, Bowles said the young standout continues to disrupt backfields even in weeks where production fluctuates.

“He’s playing hard,” Bowles said. “Some weeks, he has production; some weeks, he just misses some. We’ve got to get a little more production, but he does wreck the backfield.”

Jalon Daniels’ Debut and Offensive Struggles

Bowles assessed rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels’ first NFL start as a mix of positives and areas for improvement. Daniels showed poise at times but made mistakes that Bowles expects him to correct quickly.

“First‑time rookie playing, he’s going to have some ups and downs,” Bowles said. “We look for him to be a little better this Thursday.”

Bowles pointed to penalties and drive‑killing setbacks as the primary reason for the offense’s inconsistency. He acknowledged the need to get receivers Emeka Egbuka and Chris Godwin Jr. more involved but said defensive adjustments and penalties have limited opportunities.

Sean Tucker’s Role and the Challenge Ahead

Bowles said running back Sean Tucker continues to earn more reps through toughness and consistency. He reiterated that the team will ride the hot hand among its three backs.

Looking ahead to Dallas, Bowles described the Cowboys as one of the most physically gifted teams Tampa Bay will face this season, citing their size, playmakers, and depth on both sides of the ball.

A’Shawn Robinson on Defensive Focus

Defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson emphasized communication and film study as the Buccaneers prepare for Thursday night. He said the defense must create negative plays, win third downs, and build on the two turnovers generated against Green Bay.

“Our communication, our standard, making sure we’re holding each other accountable,” Robinson said. “It’s been good — it hasn’t been great. We’re looking to be great.”
