FSU needs a new age CEO and soon

The changing landscape

Florida State is entering a decade where athletic departments must operate like modern sports enterprises. Conference realignment, media‑rights disruption, NIL expansion, and football‑driven revenue pressures demand a leader who understands both campus culture and national sports business. Notre Dame recognized this early when it elevated former NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua into a CEO‑style role overseeing all aspects of athletics. Florida State should consider the same approach.

Why the CEO model works

The traditional athletic director role is no longer enough. A CEO of Sports has full authority over media strategy, football operations, NIL structure, donor relations, corporate partnerships, and long‑term conference positioning. This model attracts leaders who would never consider a campus‑based AD job but would embrace a modern, enterprise‑level position.

Tim Scanlan’s unique profile

Tim Scanlan blends ESPN experience with his current role at Octagon, where he represents top sports broadcasters and negotiates major media contracts. At ESPN, he worked across talent development, production strategy, and network relationships. At Octagon, he manages high‑stakes negotiations and understands how networks, conferences, and personalities interact. That combination makes him a rare candidate who can oversee football’s business engine, modernize FSU’s media presence, and build national credibility.

Andrea Nelson brings executive polish

Andrea Nelson, EVP at CBS Sports, offers a different but equally compelling profile. She oversees major event operations, production strategy, and network partnerships. Her experience with the NCAA Tournament and CBS’s broad sports portfolio gives her a deep understanding of large‑scale logistics, brand management, and long‑term planning. Nelson would bring stability, modern leadership, and national respect to a department that needs all three.

The opportunity ahead

If Florida State wants to impress the Big Ten, SEC, ESPN, FOX, and major donors, it must think bigger than a traditional AD search. A CEO of Sports with full authority could attract leaders like Scanlan or Nelson, giving FSU the kind of national presence Notre Dame achieved with Bevacqua. The moment demands bold thinking, and Florida State has the brand power to make it happen.
