Another poll shows a massive lead for Byron Donalds in GOP Primary race

Polls continue to show a race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination that has one clear front-runner and a group of also-rans far behind, with increasingly limited time to catch up.

The latest is from Cygnal, which has U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds with 43% support, well ahead of businessman James Fishback’s 12%, Lt. Gov. Jay Collins’ 11%, and former House Speaker Paul Renner’s 2%.

While 31% of respondents say they are undecided, it would take all of them going to a single non-Donalds candidate to close the gap in this survey.

“This is an early race with a clear leader, but also a large undecided share with some meaningful room for movement from the lesser-known names as voters learn more about the rest of the field,” said Cygnal’s Mitch Brown.

Whether voters will learn about the rest of the field in time for it to matter is doubtful.

Three out of four voters know who Donalds is, while just 35% have heard of Collins, 31% of Fishback and 17% of Renner.

According to recent fundraising reports filed with the state Division of Elections, only Donalds has the money to reach a statewide audience, with donors having deserted his opponents.

The Congressman had roughly $60 million to spend at last check, while Renner had roughly $2 million. Collins had $1.1 million, while Fishback had less than $50,000 on hand.

On average, Donalds has 45% support in polls, with Collins and Fishback at 10% and Renner at 3%.
