Rickelle Williams’ year of reckless hiring exposed

Almost a year after Rickelle Williams became City Manager, as of April 12, 2026, Fort Lauderdale taxpayers are facing a huge expense.

According to public records from Transparency Fort Lauderdale, shared with Florida Politics, more than $15 million has been added to City Hall’s payroll since Williams was hired. This figure does not include first responders or emergency personnel.

This isn’t prudent growth; it’s a hiring spree that reeks of favoritism, cronyism, and zero accountability.

Florida Politics has previously reported that anonymous sources inside City Hall describe a troubling situation. Longtime staff members, who have supported city operations for years, say they feel demoralized and pushed aside. Nearly 20 new hires, earning over $3.5 million in salaries, have replaced experienced employees who now worry about possible retaliation. As one insider put it, “It’s a purge disguised as progress.” Another said, “Loyalty trumps competence, and questions get you sidelined.”

Where is the transparency? Williams and her team have not provided basic information about the new hires’ qualifications, roles, or why they were needed. Did Fort Lauderdale really need more than 20 new administrators during a tight budget? Or is this just growing the bureaucracy at the public’s expense? Over $15 million has gone to these salaries, while city services continue to struggle.

The responsibility for this situation lies with the Mayor and City Commission.

Demand accountability now

Fort Lauderdale residents deserve clear answers. The city should release complete lists of new hires, including resumes, salaries, and justification reports.

An independent audit of all payroll additions since Williams was hired should be launched, with public hearings. Non-essential new hires should be suspended until a review is complete. Whistleblowers should be protected by law from retaliation.

Residents are encouraged to contact City Hall and attend Commission meetings.

If Williams does not provide transparency, she should be removed from her position.

Replace the recent hires who were chosen for personal connections, bring back experienced staff, and reduce unnecessary spending. Taxpayers should not have to pay any more because of this situation.
