Former Colorado Rapids and Arsenal star Anders Limpar wants to see Cristiano Ronaldo call it a day after the World Cup and ignore any temptation to move to MLS to see out his illustrious career.

The Portugal international is the star attraction in Saudi Arabia right now, as he desperately seeks to surpass the 1000 goal mark, and all eyes will be on him and his great rival Lionel Messi at this summer’s World Cup – which is set to be their last.

There have been murmurs of Ronaldo moving to MLS to enjoy one last payday and perhaps offer him a route into Hollywood afterwards, but ex-Sweden international Limpar has warned the 41-year-old could get embarrassed playing in America because of the high level of standard.

Limpar, speaking via NewBettingSites.uk, said: “If MLS is to become an even bigger league, it should want to bring a star like Cristiano Ronaldo to the USA but he’s 41 years old now.

“He was injured for Portugal’s last two games. He’s got a World Cup coming up. I admire these guys like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and how they can still keep playing all that they have won, it’s amazing, but surely Ronaldo should pack it in now, after the World Cup?

“Why would you start another journey in MLS at 41? It’s not an easy league to play in. There are many very good players over there. My message to Ronaldo is please, for the sake of your legacy, score your 1,000 goals and then call it a day.

“Nobody can get close to achieving what he has achieved as a soccer player. Come on. Don’t be stubborn. Just face life and pack it in.”

Ronaldo currently sits on a remarkable 967 goals in 1310 games played and will be looking to add to that tally in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Nassr and at the World Cup this summer.

Portugal face DR Congo in their opening World Cup group fixture before going head-to-head with Uzbekistan and Colombia. Ronaldo and co will fancy their chances of comfortably progressing to the knockout rounds.

But their chance of glory will be difficult as the likes of Spain, France, England, Brazil and Argentina will fancy their hopes as well.
