Florida Republicans lead uprising in House against all Senate bills until SAVE America Act passes

Several Florida members of the House say they will vote against all Senate bills until an election bill passes.

U.S. Rep. Randy Fine, an Atlantic Coast Republican, led a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune signed by 25 Republicans who committed to vote against all bills originating in the Senate until the chamber passes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE) America Act. The letter notes that the bill has been President Donald Trump’s top priority.

“We, the undersigned, are prepared to vote NO on any Senate bill on the House Floor. We made a promise to the American people. It’s time to deliver,” the letter reads.

“Consider this our filibuster.”

The message came a day after U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Pinellas Republican, led 40 Republicans in voting against a noncontroversial Senate bill in a House vote.

“Liberty is not free. This is the mark of the new Tea Party,” Luna posted on X. “On the celebration of the 250th, we unite. We tell the Senate who is in charge. The people want voter ID. Democrats, Republicans and Independents unite.”

She spearheaded a protest vote Tuesday evening against the Small Business Innovation and Economic Security Act, a bipartisan bill that still passed on a 345-41 vote. But dissenting votes included 40 Republicans who voted to take a stance against any legislation that originates in the upper chamber. That included U.S. Reps. Aaron Bean of Fernandina Beach, Byron Donalds of Naples and Cory Mills of New Smyrna Beach, as well as Fine and Luna.

While the dissenting votes did not affect whether the bill on Tuesday evening passed, that size bloc of Republicans would kill any partisan priorities of House leadership, as Republicans currently hold just a narrow 217-214 majority in the chamber.

The protest votes follow a threat from the White House to delay implementation of bills even if they pass. Trump in a Truth Social post this weekend said he won’t sign any legislation until the election reform bill passes.

The SAVE America Act has proven divisive in both chambers. Only four Democrats supported a version of the bill passed by the House last April, none of them from Florida.

The legislation imposes citizenship requirements, and amendments supported by Trump would also bar nearly all mail-in ballots and prohibit transgender women participating in women’s sports or on transgender health care for minors.

Florida Republicans make up a substantial number of Republicans threatening to reject all Senate legislation until the SAVE America Act passes.

Fine’s letter was signed by Donalds, Luna, Mills and U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis of Fort Walton Beach.
