Switzerland is the only country bidding for the event.
Politicians in Switzerland have decided that it would be a great idea that the country hosts the 2038 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Whether Swiss citizens agree, that is another story. In the past Swiss residents have said no to hosting the event. The Swiss government is ready to put up $250 million U. S. in an effort to get the event. Swiss politicians don’t have to give into all of the International Olympic Committee’s demands. Switzerland is the only country currently talking with the IOC about the 2038 Games. Switzerland hosted the Winter Games in 1928 and 1948 in St. Moritz. In the 21st century, Swiss citizens have rejected the possibility of hosting the Games on a number of occasions.
In 2018, voters in two different cantons in Switzerland told the IOC thanks but no thanks to the 2026 winter event. The IOC is headquartered in Switzerland. The IOC is having major difficulties selling its winter crown jewel event. The IOC has had major difficulties selling its major summer crown jewel event although countries are now clamoring for the event. Numerous cities and countries have slammed the door on the IOC’s sales force and there is a major reason for that. The cost of the Games, some of which is passed onto local taxpayers, which is way too expensive and people don’t want to sink billions into a sports event that leaves lasting debt. Politicians and business leaders have failed to convince voters of the benefits of having the Olympics in town and those politicians and business leaders have little to offer except having the Olympics in town will put us on the map. The IOC likes to offer something about legacy as part of the final sales pitch to voters. The real legacy is decades of paying down the event debt.
