When it comes to the recent killings of two people protesting aggressive immigration enforcement, Ron DeSantis urges a nuanced approach.
While he admits that it’s a tragedy that Renee Good and Alex Pretti were killed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Minneapolis this month, he also says that the federal forces have uniquely difficult jobs and deserve understanding in that context.
“Look, in these individual instances, which are tragic, we should insist on high standards for these officers, and they should do a review, and if there’s something that needs, if they need to be held accountable, they should do it,” DeSantis said on Tuesday’s “Ingraham Angle.”
But while the feds should see if the officers were performing as trained, the Governor cautioned that they face unique pressures that must be considered.
“But understand what they’re facing. They’re facing threats. People are going after their families just for enforcing the law. They have people that are trying to frustrate their core functions of law enforcement. That’s not something that a typical police officer would have to deal with on a day to day basis. And so the environment that DHS and ICE is having to operate in is unlike anything we’ve seen in recent times. There’s massive hostility being directed at them, and not just in terms of, oh, you’re protesting, but you’re doing things that are putting their lives in danger. So it’s a difficult assignment, and I just think you should have some sympathy for what they’re having to deal with. Even if you want to insist on the accountability, which we should do as well.”
